Newbury Course Feb 6th 2010

Sat 6th Feb 2010 saw my 22nd Hands-on RA course. Three have been held in the Republic of Ireland and one in Northumberland, so that must make it the 17th held at my practice in Newbury (as one was held at the education facility at Precison Dental Studio in Thatcham.

So what was different about this one?  Well to begin with all the delegates had used RA before. One had given up some years ago ( more of that later) , the others were currently offering it to their patients. One in the NHS Communiuty Service, the other , like me in single-handed private practice from the Midland, Dr. Peter Winter-Moore.

Two of the attendees lay claim to being the farthest travellers having come from The Black Isle near Inverness. Dave and Barbera Naisby run a remarkable practice and  Dave is also a Twitter buddy and a facebook friend. We also met up at the BDTA Showcase in 2009 and so we were acquaintances beforehand. Indeed we had net a few years earlier at a special Chris Barrow workshop  too.

The day was very interactive and I received excellent feedback in general but here is the fantastic testimonial I received from the Naisby's last night. Thanks to them both for their appreciation and good luck with the equipment installation and introduction of this service to their patients.

RA Course Report 13th June 2009

My Hands-on RA course was held at The Richard Charon Dental Practice, St. Mary's House , in Newbury on Saturday 13th June 2009, a hot and sunny day in Newbury. So I was delighted that 4 dentists and 3 dental nurses were prepared to spend most of the day inside learning how they can add value to their practices and to the range of services they offer by providing Inhalation Sedation / RA to their patients.

They came from Durham, Sheffield, Sussex and Luton. Here is what they had to say on the feedback questionnaires in reply to assessing Venue, Relevance, Audio-visuals and Speaker from Poor to Excellent:

4 of the 7 returned excellent for all 4 categories! 3 did mark me down to "good" or "very good" for audio-visuals (but then I did invite the group to mark me down as we had a mini glitch with the video relay for a short time). There were a couple of others who marked venue or relevance (can’t please everyone I guess) down to "very good". Nice to get 100% excellent feedback for the speaker though!!

Hands-on RA Course

On a beautiful, sunny autumn day in Dublin,

fifteen members of the Smile Dental Spa group of dental practices, gave up their Saturday to come and learn about RA/Inhalation Sedation in Group’s flagship Practice.

My wife Chris, who as an RDN and certified Dental Sedation Assistant helps me run the course, facilitated by one of the group’s two clinical director, Dr. Anne O’Donnell from Wexford, ably assisted by her husband Shane.

The Smile Spa group’s flagship practice occupies an extraordinary position in central Dublin. Housed in an ornate Georgian building with massive Corinthian Pillars at its grand entrance, it had formerly been a bank. Various storage, staff and radiography facilities in the basement, occupy the original bank vaults, still with their armored doors!

The building overlooks the historic General Post Office in O’Connell St. the site of the heart of the Easter uprising and subsequent birth of the independent Irish state in 1916.  O'Connell Street is, I suppose, equivalent to London’s Oxford St. though it is a real boulevard in scale.

The stunning 260m high Dublin Spire is just a few steps from the practice entrance !

The fifteen delegates included dentists and DNs from the multi-chair clinic, set out as most us remember a dental hospital dept.

On the First floor are two splendidly laid-out more traditional surgeries, though in a very contemporary style. A large one and a smaller one where more advanced treatments are normally done.

The day’s teaching on Inhalation Sedation was carried out there with video link to the smaller surgery where the practical sessions took place. Additional video of real-time patient treatment both children and adults were shown to the group. As usual there was plenty of opportunity for interactive discussion.
